Hidden Clouds?!
Interesting experience yesterday and one to pay attention to if you are a pilot. At FDW, the AWOS-3 sensor package was saying that the clouds were at 3000 ft. They were! Unfortunately, the sensor package completely missed the clouds at 800 ft AGL...even though they were an extensive broken condition directly over the AWOS location. A fellow pilot launched without expecting the low clouds, only to have to take some extraordinary measures to get back on the ground while maintaining VFR flight conditions. The lesson...a current METAR is better than nothing but it may not be completely right. Expect the unexpected.
